SPRINGDALE (KDKA) — A Springdale father is lobbying for funding to put automatic defibrillator devices at municipal parks after his little boy died from an apparent undetected heart condition.

Brandin Bolin-Kern, 6, collapsed at Springdale’s Agan Park on September 24th. He and his dad were there for a Cub Scout camping trip.

Joe Kern is now pushing the borough to install AED devices in recreational areas.

“I’m not going to let this go and I’m going to try to be an advocate for other communities whether it’s Pittsburgh or anywhere else – any school system, any park – it should always be there,” he told KDKA-TV.

Borough council member Jason Fry tells KDKA’s Kym Gable that it’s something council would like to do. It’s being considered during budget talks.

“We haven’t officially had a meeting yet, but it has been thrown on the preliminary budget – something we’d like to do,” he said.

Meanwhile, there is a memorial fund set up for Brandin at all PNC Bank and First Commonwealth Bank locations.

The autopsy is not complete but preliminary findings point to some kind of heart condition.
